July 1st: Skagway and the Yukon Territory

Skagway was our longest day docked during the cruise and it gave us time to not only explore the cute town, but also take an adventurous ride into the Yukon Territory. Kelly had arranged for a driver to pick us up in a SUV and take us over White Pass on the Klondike Highway. Jim, our driver, was great. We learned all about the Gold Rush and the "real men" that trudged up the mountain in hopes of surviving and striking it rich. He also pointed out the unique flora and fauna and various sites we were seeing. Actually, we didn't see much of anything for the first hour or so as the fog was so thick there was almost no visibility. Thankfully, it let up and we were able to take it all in. The "Tormented Valley" was amazing. The weather is so bad there, that 100 year old pine trees only grow a few feet tall. It looked like a Disney set. The photos won't do it justice, but it was truly the most unique landscape we've ever seen. We passed into the Yukon, our first Canadian stop of the trip. The lakes were beautiful....mostly glacial making for amazing colors of green. A bear siting along the route was an exciting bonus!
